Roy,
Was just surfin' around and found out that you were stationed in Everett. As an FA, I was sent to PF-8, located in Hong Kong Harbor, in the Spring of 1950 and put into the Firerooms. The skipper's name was Judge, I think. Remained on board even after taking a hit in mount 32.
Then, in '52 or '53, I was
transferred to firerooms in USS Prairie (AD-15) while alongside in Sasebo
Harbor. Eventually, I made it to the "E" Gang and then to the IC
Room. Made IC3 in '53, got married and made IC2 in '54, IC1 in '55
and sent to USS Frontier (AD-25) then USS Bryce Canyon (AD-36) in '56.
I applied and was selected into NESEP in '57,
made ETC(A) Jan58. In '61, Received a BSEE from Univ. Wash. and
then BUPERS sent me to OCS and I became an ENS(Line).
After duty as Asst CIC/DCA in USS Preble (DLG-15), I went to NavSta KeyWest's Ship Repair Dept (small 399 man shipyard) became Yard Production officer. This was the closest work related to my Navy Provided Training and education. I was transferred from KWest summer '67 because BUPERS Vietnam Office identified me as the only Lt eligible to act as an ARMY LIAISON Officer in VietNam.
I was Off to COMRIVFLOT ONE's
Staff and BUPERs didn't know where it was located! Just go to the
West Coast and ask around and that I did, finding it not yet Commissioned
but head quartered at Amphib Base Coronado. After reading and studying
the war on the Mississippi and the French in Indo China, I became an expert
in land and riverine war,
ha!ha!
Jan '67 arrived in country,
March of '67, I relieved another LT as COMRIVDIV 111 (they didn't get another
expert Army Liaison type). The Division had 25 boats and about 180
brave sailors and its mission was to
insert an Army Infantry Battalion into hot/hostile objectives via the
rivers and streams, many times fighting both in and out. Lost 5 sailors
and sent back, prematurely, about 15 or more.
Then '69 found me as 1st Lt on USS Monticello (LSD-15) and in 1971, ended my 22 year Navy career, as a Lt and Security Officer of PacResFlt SDiego.
I taught Engr. and Electronics at a local community college for 23 years and retired in 1994.
Why send you all this?
I thought you might be interested in what happened to at least 1 of the
crew from the Everett. Good God! I was interested in you! No
one has ever heard of it or that it was the first ship to be commissioned
as a man-o-war OUTSIDE OF THE USA (Japan) since the Civil war. Do
you have any pictures of it or names of crew from the
'52 era in USS Everett.
Thanks for the memories,
Ray
