"Sam Tirante"

This photo of Sam is to my knowledge the only figurehead to put to sea on a U. S. Naval vessel in the last half century or so. For some strange reason, other boat crews wanted to steal him. Heard that one crew succeeded for a 'brief' wrongful possession. If someone can provide the story, I would be pleased to include it here (after judicious editing, of course). SS 420
